If you are looking for the traditional Thai experience why not try Wat Po herbal sauna. Located at the temple in Ban Tai, the herbal sauna offers you the chance to experience a very traditional sauna managed by the temple. What makes this so special is that the voluntary workers boil up local herbs to mix into the steam that is pumped into the sauna which creates a very therapeutic and healing environment. Along the same genre you will find many Yoga schools and wellness centers on Ko Phangan, many of which have been established by long term residents. Meditation retreats can be found at the islands oldest temple, Wat Khao Tham. Here there is also a fabulous and easily accessible view point that looks out across the whole of the south of the island, over the sea and towards Koh Samui. If you on the other hand you are looking for something more adventurous why not try your hand at some of the more extreme sports that have appeared on the island over the past several years. You could try wake boarding in the 3km long bay of Chaloklum, in the very northern point of the island. The bay is surrounded by mountains so it offers a perfectly flat playground for learning, improving and enjoying the sport. You will also find sports such as kite surfing, mountain biking, diving, water skiing, and there is even a micro-lite. Accommodation is usually easy to book and find. However in the busiest periods of the year it is advisable to book in advance as the island gets full very quickly. Due to the now infamous full moon party Ko Phangan gets very busy on a monthly basis for a period of 2 days either side of the event and then tends to quiet down again as the party goers move off the island to their next location. Haad Rin ( the location of the full moon party ) is situated in one far corner of the island so if you are not traveling there for the party you can stay most places on the island and not even notice that it is happening. Due to the diversity of Thailand's tourism industry Ko Phangan offers something for everyone and nearly everyone leaves the island with a big smile and unforgettable memories.

Koh Phangan Thailand - information

Koh Phangan Thailand how to get to koh phangan
Koh Phangan Thailand how to get to koh phangan

Sitting on a three hour boat ride from the mainland, Koh Phangan is the last unspoiled island of any major size left in Thailand. Differing from its sister Koh Samui in many ways. Where Koh Samui is brash and built up, Koh Phangan is laid back with a landscape. Large property developers have yet to begin exploiting this tropical paradise, most development is restricted to discrete bungalow resorts.

Koh Phangan is still a popular destination for backpackers and budget travellers, infamous for its Full Moon Party most young travellers see the island as one of the highlights of their trip to Thailand. The party takes place at the southern end of the island in the town of Haad Rin, a hedonistic party town made up of meandering side streets packed with bars, restaurants and gift shops, bungalow resorts to suit every pocket and above all else the stunning Haad Rin Nok beach. At the time of the full moon, Haad Rin is packed full of revellers and advanced booking is recommended if you wish to stay in this part of the island at this time of the month.

Moving north from Haad Rin we next encounter Ban Tai, home to both the Half Moon Party and the Shiva Moon Party both large events themselves. Ban Tai is also where you will find the 'horny mile', a stretch of road almost a mile long that is populated by lady bars on each side. These bars are a lot more laid back than their counterparts in either Bangkok or Pattaya and seem to be a solid favourite with the middle aged tourists who arrive upon Koh Phangan.

Further north still you will come to Thongsala, the only true town upon the island, a vibrant mix of Thai shops, western bars and restaurants along with traditional food markets at every turn. At night the main market square becomes an open air restaurant serviced by a couple of dozen street vendors who set up tables and ply their trade. Some of the best food on Koh Phangan can be found here after the sun sets. Thongsala also houses the main ferry pier for the island and forms a natural gateway to the mainland.

Full Moon Party Haad Rin, Koh Phangan

KOH PHANGAN is a very special place, there are few places in this world where you can live out your desert island dreams of palm trees and white sand beaches, and still have a blinding night out at a rocking party every month. With the global notoriety that the Full Moon Party has gained as being one of the biggest and best beach bashes in the world, we get more than our fair share of hedonists gracing our shores. Each year the scene here grows with the ever-increasing number of party faithful that return, bringing their mates and spreading the vibe. Haad Rin is home to the Full Moon Party and also houses about 3-5000 rather mad people; it is the island's nightlife capital and has Koh Phangan's biggest concentration of beach clubs that collectively put on the ultimate travellers get together.

The Full Moon is far more than a party; it is Haad Rin's dance music festival, with everything from drum and bass to full-on psy-trance. Paradise Bungalows, the site of the original Full Moon Party, consistently puts on the biggest show with inspired decor and a combination of superb resident and guest international DJs.

Full Moon Party Information The frist Full Moon Party either went off in 1987 or 1988, no-one is really sure; and it was someone's birthday. It was such a good party that the same crew met up again at Paradise Bungalows and partied under the next Full Moon. From there on the party grew to be a mecca for travellers in the 90s and then became the global dance music festival that it is today, attracting thousands of visitors from every walk of life.

There are now over 10 major sound systems on the beach playing everything from psy-trance to drum and bass with each one representing a different genre. Crowd sizes very from arond 8,000 in low season getting up to 30,000 in the high season; and inline with the party's growing popularity, Haad Rin has been expanding to accommodate its guests. There are now over 5,000 rooms and hundreds of cool bars, boutiques, restaurants and of course the great nightlife. If you want to come and enjoy the party, consider booking a room on Koh Phangan as accommodation gets jammed well before the Full Moon date. Note: All Party goers will need to pay 100 Baht per person entrance fee when arriving in Haad Rin for the Full Moon Party night.
